Early life and abuse

Born to Clauddine “Dee Dee” and Rod Blanchard, Gypsy was subjected to extreme medical abuse consistent with Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Her mother falsely claimed she suffered from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, seizures, and developmental delays. Confined to wheelchairs and subjected to needless surgeries, Gypsy lived under total isolation and deception until adulthood.

The 2015 murder

In June 2015, desperate to escape the abuse, Gypsy persuaded her online boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to kill Dee Dee at their Missouri home. Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee to death while Gypsy hid nearby. Both were soon arrested in Wisconsin. Gypsy cooperated with investigators, expressing remorse and explaining years of coercive control. Godejohn received a life sentence without parole; Gypsy accepted a plea deal for a reduced charge.

Prison and release

Imprisoned at Missouri’s Chillicothe Correctional Center, Blanchard earned her GED and participated in counseling. Authorities noted her improved health and outlook—physical signs of recovery from malnourishment and trauma. After serving roughly eight and a half years (85 percent of her sentence), she was granted parole in late 2023.

Life after prison

Since release, Blanchard has remained in the public eye through television interviews, the docuseries The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and memoir projects. She married and later divorced Ryan Anderson, then rekindled a relationship with former fiancé Ken Urker. The couple welcomed a daughter in 2024. Blanchard has spoken about trauma therapy, motherhood, and using her story to advocate for victims of medical and familial abuse.
