She might be smiling, but this little girl grew up to commit the worst crime in American History

This is Darlie Routier — a stunning, outgoing 26-year-old mom from Rowlett, Texas. She had a nice suburban home, a husband who worked, and two adorable little boys: Devon (6) and Damon (5). She loved throwing big birthday parties, decorating her house, and posting happy family photos. Everyone saw her as the perfect all-American mom.
But in the early morning hours of June 6, 1996, everything changed forever.
What She Claimed Happened:
Darlie called 911 screaming that a masked intruder had broken into her house and attacked her family while they slept in the downstairs family room. She said the man stabbed her and her two boys, then fled.
When police arrived:
- Both boys had been brutally stabbed to death.
- Darlie had knife wounds to her throat and arm (but they were not life-threatening).
The Evidence That Shocked Everyone:
The crime scene didn’t match her story. Police found very little evidence of an intruder. The prosecution argued she staged the break-in.
Just 8 days after the murders — while her boys were not even buried yet — Darlie was filmed at their gravesite laughing, spraying Silly String, singing “Happy Birthday,” and smiling. That video was played multiple times during her trial and became one of the strongest pieces of evidence against her.
The Outcome:
Darlie was arrested and convicted in 1997 of the capital murder of her son Damon. She was sentenced to death row in Texas.
To this day (2026), Darlie Routier remains on death row. She has always maintained her innocence, and her case is still one of the most debated and controversial in modern American true crime.
